To fulfill our mission of making Christlike disciples in the nations—starting within our own district—the Kansas City District is committed to reaching new areas and new people groups through church planting. With New Churches as one of our core district values, we recognize that church planting is one of the most fruitful ministries in terms of the number of conversions in a new area. Therefore, our focus is on the Raising, Sending, and Supporting of new church plants, church planters, and multiplying congregations.

Roles

WHAT IS?
DISTRICT LIAISON, MENTOR AND COACH ROLES

District Liaison

The District Liaison is a member of the Kansas City District Church Plant Team, assigned by the district to each church plant. Their role is to meet regularly with church planters to provide encouragement and address key areas that contribute to the healthy growth of their ministry. Additionally, the District Liaison plays a vital role in establishing an accountability system that helps identify both strengths and areas for improvement.

A church planter is matched with a District Liaison once a new ministry is registered, and the partnership continues until the ministry is officially organized or as long as the ministry remains active.

Meeting Frequency: Once a month. Meetings should be held in person every other month or conducted via an online meeting platform as needed.

Key Areas Addressed by the District Liaison:

  • Implementation Plan: Reviewing goals, targets, progress, challenges, necessary adjustments, and testimonies.
  • Church Plant Systems: Assessing key ministry areas, including evangelism, outreach, finances, attendance, preaching, and partnerships with the mother church.
  • Fulfillment of Requirements: Ensuring mentorship meetings occur, monthly statistics and annual pastor reports are submitted, and financial reports are provided (if a grant has been awarded).
  • Education & Credentialing: Tracking progress and identifying needs related to ministerial education and credentialing.
  • Coaching Services & Follow-Up: Assessing the need for coaching, processing requests, setting goals, and reviewing final reports.

Mentor

Mentorship is a long-term relational investment designed to provide encouragement and personal support. All mentorship relationships are strictly confidential. While having a mentor is a requirement for leaders of officially registered church plants in the Kansas City District, all conversations between a mentor and mentee remain private. The District Liaison may only confirm that regular mentorship meetings are taking place but will not inquire about their content.

Meeting Frequency: Ideally once a week, but at least once a month.

Areas Addressed in a Mentorship Relationship:

  • Personal Well-Being: Physical, emotional, and spiritual health, personal struggles, temptations, and balancing responsibilities.
  • Family: Relationships with spouse, children, and extended family.
  • Bi-Vocational Work & Finances: Managing work outside of ministry and personal financial well-being.
  • Church Leadership: Navigating relationships, growth, stressors, and ministry challenges.
  • Additional Areas of Need: Any other topics relevant to the mentee’s personal or ministry life.

Coach

Coaching is a short-term relationship aimed at improving specific ministry skills. For a church planter, coaching may offer support and growth in areas such as preaching, financial management, fundraising, church plant implementation, evangelism, partnerships, and more. Coaching is typically provided by an expert in the relevant area and may be offered free of charge or for a fee.

Meeting Frequency: Established by coach.

Partnering Opportunities

Church planting is not just for church planters or multiplying churches. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes multiple churches working together to plant a healthy new church.

PRAY

Prayer is crucial for church planting due to its role in spreading the gospel, building faith communities, and transforming lives. Here are ways you and your church can pray:

  • God’s Guidance and Wisdom: Seeking God’s direction and clarity (James 1:5).
  • Spiritual Protection: Praying against opposition (Ephesians 6:12).
  • Open Hearts for the Gospel: Hearts ready to receive the message (Acts 16:14).
  • Provision of Resources: Financial, human, and material needs (Philippians 4:19).
  • Strength for Leaders: Encouragement and perseverance (Isaiah 40:31).
  • Unity Among Believers: Avoiding division and staying focused (John 17:20–23).
  • Community Impact: Favor in outreach and service (Matthew 5:14–16).
  • Multiplication of Disciples: Making and multiplying disciples (Matthew 28:19–20).
  • Endurance in Trials: Pushing through challenges (Galatians 6:9).
  • The Glory of God: Expanding His kingdom (Habakkuk 2:14).

PARTNER

Aside from prayer and finances, your church can support a new church plant in many practical ways:

  • Sending Mission Teams: Outreach, service, worship, and admin help.
  • Sharing Resources: Equipment, materials, facilities, training.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Coaching, pastoral care, staff development.
  • Community Outreach: Evangelism, food drives, building local relationships.
  • Church Member Participation: Attending, supporting, or joining the plant.
  • Admin & Legal Support: Bookkeeping, website, legal help, nonprofit paperwork.
  • Worship & Teaching: Guest worship teams, preaching, training musicians.
  • Long-Term Partnership: Ongoing support, gatherings, and future multiplication.

SUPPORT

Starting a new church requires funding. Donations can go to the KC District Church Plant New Start Support Grant Fund or directly to a New Start Church. All gifts are considered Approved Mission Special Funds.

  • Facility Costs: Rent, utilities, renovations, insurance.
  • Staffing: Pastors, admin, worship, youth/kids staff.
  • Worship Equipment: Sound, lights, instruments, livestream gear.
  • Outreach: Advertising, events, digital media, evangelism materials.
  • Ministry Programs: Supplies for children, youth, small groups, counseling.
  • Administrative: Software, office, legal fees, phone, internet.
  • Missions & Benevolence: Local aid, disaster response, member needs.
  • Church Growth: Leadership training, retreats, future church plants.
